Chapter 4 Chinese Input Methods (Part I)
UnionWay Chinese System provides the following eight input methods: ZhuYin (
),
PinYin (
), English - Chinese (
),
CangJie (
), Internal Code (
),
Cantonese (
), Symbol (
)
and Simple-Stroke (
) (only in the
Big5 mode).
Both the keyboard and mouse are supported in each Chinese input method. In addition,
any new Chinese input method could be added into UnionWay Chinese system.
IME Parameter Setting
The default input method of UnionWay Chinese system is English. Click the
with the left mouse button will activate
the IME Configuration dialog box:

There are three pages with their own page tag in the IME Configuration dialog
box, the first is Input Method page for specifying all the input parameters; the
second is Keyboard page displaying the keyboard map of the current IME; and the
third is Option page for customizing IME. Click any of the tag with the left mouse
button will bring that page to the front. Click Close button will close and end
the IME Configuration dialog box.
ZhuYin Input Method
In the IME Configuration dialog box, ZhuYin is the first Chinese input method
listed. It conforms to the general characteristic of Mandarin pronunciation, having
the component of Consonant, Vowel, and Tone. With these three components, it is
then made possible for computer input. In UnionWay Chinese professional system,
it not only provides the single word input (only single word input for the standard
system), but also provides the Chinese word phrase input of 2 to 4 character word
phrase, further distinguishes the input that is with tone and without tone. Each
user may select and define their preferred IME.
Entering UnionWay Chinese system, English
is the default input method. You
can use the hot key "Ctrl + Alt + F1" or "Ctrl + Space" to switch to ZhuYin input
method ("Ctrl + Space" switch between the current Chinese input method and English
input method). If you click the
button
with the left mouse button, the IME Configuration dialog box will appear and switch
to ZhuYin input method, it is referred to as the "ZhuYin dialog box". Select the
Keyboard tag will bring up the following keyboard layout map:

This is the keyboard layout conforming to the ET (
)
with tone keyboard definition. On the upper right corner, next to the spin
button, the number 1 is indicating
that the current keyboard displayed is layout number 1. Clicking the "up" arrow
on the spin button will change the display to 2, bringing us to the Standard with
tone keyboard layout:

Clicking the "up" arrow on the spin button again will change the display to 3,
bringing us to the keyboard layout conforming to the ET without tone keyboard definition:

Clicking the "up" arrow one more time on the spin button will change the display
to 4, bringing us to the Standard without tone keyboard layout:

Notice the first two input keyboard layout are with tone, and the last two input
keyboard layout are without tone. It is very important to select the keyboard layout
that you are familiar with.
Following are some of the hot keys that you can use during the input:
Ctrl + Space or switch between the current Chinese input method Alt +
¬ and English input method
Backspace deletes one input code
Esc clears all input code
Space Bar turn to the next words (or phrases)
page
Turn to the previous words (or phrases) page
1 to 8 (F1 to F8) are used for selecting the target word (or phrase)
Following are the representation of the tones:
¡E Light tone
Space First tone
£½ Second tone
£¾ Third tone
£¿ Forth tone
For each word in the ZhuYin IME, it usually requires the "Consonant + Vowel +
(Tone)"; and for the word phrase, it usually requires the "completion of the First
Word + Consonant of the Second Word".
while typing or selecting the word or phrase into the application program., you
may need to use the function keys from F1 to F8 to replace the numeric keys 1 to
8 when the numeric keys are used for tone or phrase input code mapping. If you only
prefer to input single word (no more phrase), please enable
option from ZhuYin dialog box.
Intelligent ZhuYin Input Method
Intelligent ZhuYin IME provided by UnionWay Chinese system is the simplest and
easiest to use for Chinese character input. It is most flexible for word phrase
and short sentence input. While in the ZhuYin dialog box, selecting the
option will activate the Intelligent
mode and set it as a default option for subsequent use of UnionWay Chinese system.
Input Single Word
Using
as an example:
ZhuYin With Tone Input
While in the ZhuYin input mode, and is on the keyboard layout 1 or 2, type the
input code
for
,
it does not display on the first word page, use the Space bar or ¡õ key to get to
the second page, the target word
is
on the position 1 as shown below (it may be on different position for different
user due to the Auto Sort option may have sorted the word into different position):

Press the numeric key 1 or the F1 key will bring the target word
into the application program at the
cursor position.
ZhuYin Without Tone Input
While in the ZhuYin input mode, and is on the keyboard layout 3 or 4, type the
input code
for
, because the
input is without tone, all the words that matches the input code regardless of which
tone it has will be displayed, one page at a time, thus increasing the page turning
frequency to find the target word. If the target word is not on the first page,
you may use the Space bar or ¡õ key to get to the next page. In this example, the
target word
is on the eighth position
as shown:

Press the numeric key 8 or the F8 key will send the target word
into the application program at the
cursor position.
It is not necessary (for both the Input With Tone and Input Without Tone) to
type all the input code to get to the target word. In the above example, by typing
in
(Consonant) or
(Consonant + Tone), could both bring
you to the target word
. However,
the more code that you type, the less pages you have to turn to get to the target
word.
There are two conditions worth noting while typing in or selecting the word into
the application program. First, you may need to use the function keys from F1 to
F8 to replace the numeric keys 1 to 8 when the numeric keys are used for tone or
phrase input code mapping, because the intended selection with numeric key may be
taken as part of the input code; Second, for input with tone, may use the ¡õ key
for paging instead of the Space bar, because the first Space entry will be taken
as the First Tone input, then the second Space entry will be taken as paging. In
this second case, all the words in the page will have the same input code and with
First Tone only.
Input Phrase
While using the Intelligent ZhuYin mode , any one of the following rules may
be applied for the two, three, or four word phrase input:
- Type only the Consonant + (Tone) of each word in the word phrase.
- Type the Consonant + (Tone) of the first two or three words in the word phrase.
- Type the complete input code of the first word + the Consonant of the second
word in the word phrase.
- Type the complete input code of the first two or three words in the word phrase.
- Type the complete input code for each of the word in the word phrase
The rule of thumb for word phrase input is that once the Consonant of all the
words are keyed in, it is not necessary to type the Vowel or the Tone, and there
is no regulation of how many words you have to use for input as long as you start
from the first word in the word phrase. However, the more code that you type, the
less pages you have to turn to get to the target word phrase.
Using word phrase
as an example:
With Tone Input
While in the ZhuYin keyboard layout 1 or 2, the following are example for locating
the word phrase
.

Without Tone Input
While in the ZhuYin keyboard layout 3 or 4, the following are example for locating
the word phrase
.

Using

Without Tone Input
While in the ZhuYin keyboard layout 3 or 4, the following are example for locating
the word phrase
.

There are two conditions worth noting while typing or selecting the phrase into
the application program. First, you may need to use the function keys from F1 to
F8 to replace the numeric keys 1 to 8 when the numeric keys are used for tone or

ZhuYin dialog box; Second, for input with tone, may use the ¡õ key for paging instead
of the Space bar, because the first Space entry will be taken as the First Tone
input (if existing), then the second Space entry will be taken as paging.
Input Short Sentence
In the dictionary of word phrase provided by UnionWay Chinese system contains
word phrases of 4 words or less. To expend any of the existing or new word phrase
into short sentence of 16 words or less, you may use any one of the dictionary expansion
method described in the next section.
ZhuYin Configuration
To customize and set the preferred parameters for ZhuYin input method, you
must select ZhuYin (
), as the current
input method in the IME Configuration dialog box as shown in the figure below:

There are two selections in the Space Character section:
This is a default
option, setting the Space bar as the page down key, equivalent to the ¡õ key. When
typing the input code in the with Tone mode, the first Space bar entry will be taken
as the First Tone input, then the second Space bar entry will be taken as paging,
and will be paging only for all the words that matches the input code and has First
Tone.
When selecting
this option, it sets the Space bar as the Send key, equivalent to the numeric key
1 (or F1 key). When in the input with Tone mode, the first Space bar entry will
be taken as the First Tone input (if existing), then the second Space bar entry
will be taken as Send, sending the first word in the page
into the application program at the cursor position. In this
case, the ¡õ key must be used for paging through the word selection. This is not
a default option.
Word Mode supports
the single word input only, no phrase. For those who are used to the single word
input in the C-Windows, this option will make you feel at home. This is not a default
option.
Character Mode
allows the display of all words that starts with the same input code. For example,
after typing the input code
, the
following words
,
,
, etc. will be displayed for selection as well. This is not a default option.
This is a default
option. Please refer to the previous section for details on the Intelligent Mode
option.
After sending
the word into the application program, this option automatically brings the selected
word or phrase to the front of the words list that has the same input code, reducing
the paging frequency for the more commonly used words or phrases. This is not a
default option.
This option automatically
sends the word or the phrase into the application program at the cursor position
while the input code only map to one word or one phrase, also it is not the beginning
input code for other words or phrases. This is not a default option.
This option will
display the complete input code for the words or phrases in the selection list.
This option will not work while in the word mode
. This is not a default option.
Imports new words
or phrases and their corresponding input code form text file into the ZhuYin dictionary.
The text file must have the file name with ".TXT" extension. The format in the text
file begins with the "Input Code + , (English comma) + Chinese Word or Phrase".
For example:
The alternate text file format begins with the "Chinese Word or Phrase + , (English
comma) + Input Code". For Example:

Each phrase is limited to 16 Chinese words or less, but there is no limitation
to the total number of entry in the text file.
While in the ZhuYin Configuration dialog box, click the
button will bring up the open file
dialog box for the text file. Specify the appropriate text file name and click OK
button, and this will bring you to the import Text file to IME Dictionary dialog
box where you can specify the text file format that you used, is it the
or the
format. Click OK button to confirm
the option selected. You will see a message indicating if the import was successful.
ZhuYin Keyboard
There are four keyboard layout provided by UnionWay Chinese system for ZhuYin
input method. They are ET (
) with
Tone keyboard, Standard (
) with Tone
keyboard, ET Without Tone keyboard, and Standard Without Tone keyboard layout.
It is very important to select the keyboard layout that you are most familiar
with. The input method is determined by the type of keyboard selected. Keyboard
selection is made by clicking the Keyboard tag while in the ZhuYin Configuration
dialog box or selecting the
key while
in the ZhuYin input mode. The keyboard type is indicated on the top right corner,
1 indicating the keyboard is in the first ZhuYin layout, clicking the spin button
will change the keyboard layout to 2, 3 or 4. You may type directly using the computer
keyboard or by using the mouse and pointer to click and select the input code that
is displayed on the keyboard map window. If for some reason the cursor is not displaying
in the application software, click the left mouse button again on the designated
position and the cursor should be displaying again. The default ZhuYin keyboard
is set to the ET with Tone layout.
Expending ZhuYin Dictionary
There are three ways to add new words or phrases into the ZhuYin dictionary:
- F12 Key. First select (highlight) a phrase of 16 Chinese words or less, then
press F12 key to add it into the ZhuYin dictionary. This added phrase can be accessed
using the phrase input rules. Please be sure that ZhuYin is the current Chinese
input method before pressing F12 key. If you find the phrase you added is not
only one in the Prompt line area, please use Shift + Fx function key to delete
extra phrase on position x .
Key.
Please refer to the previous section for the use of this key.
- Expend as you input. If you can not find the word or phrase after
entering the input code, hit the Enter key to begin the process of adding this
new word or phrase into the ZhuYin dictionary. This function is very useful for
multiple definition of input code for a particular word or phrase, also it can
be used to define the input code for a new word created by the Font Maker.
Using
as an example.
After entering the input code
,
and find that
is not in the phrase
selection. Press the Enter key and a yellow area appears on the bottom left of the
UnionWay Chinese system tool bar as shown:

The yellow zone is holding the input code of this phrase to be added, and you
can make changes to the input code while in this zone. For the ease of future reference
to this phrase, please use the standard input rules.
Pressing the Enter key again will bring up a red zone for holding the word or
phrase to be added (16 words or less). Now use the input method provided by UnionWay
Chinese system and enter the phrase
in the red zone (if you are adding
a newly created word by the Font Maker, you will have to use the Internal Code input
method to enter the new word into the red zone) as shown:

Press the Enter key again, this phrase is then simultaneously being added into
the ZhuYin dictionary and sent to the application program at the cursor position
(yellow and red zone will disappear at this time).
In the process of expending the ZhuYin dictionary, Backspace is used for delete
input code or Chinese character, Esc is to cancel the process.
Note: The Shift + Fx function keys are used to delete a word or phrase on position
x from the dictionary, pressing Shift + Fx again will restore the deleted word or
phrase.
Input Symbol Characters
Since there are no ZhuYin keyboard mapping for the Chinese symbol characters,
the Symbol Character input method is used for the input of Chinese symbol characters.
While in the ZhuYin Configuration dialog box, set the current input method to the
Symbol (
) input method. Or press
the hot key "Ctrl + Alt + F7" to switch to Symbol input method. Then click
with the left mouse button, and the
keyboard layout for Symbol input method will be displayed (clicking the Shift button
in the keyboard map window will bring up the second set of symbols for input). If
you need other symbols that are not provided in the Symbol input method keyboard
map window, please refer to the Internal Code input method for additional Chinese
symbol characters input.
PinYin Input Method
PinYin Input Method (IME) conforms to the general characteristic of Mandarin
pronunciation of each word, each having the component of Consonant, Vowel, and Tone.
With these three components, it is then made possible for computer input. In Chinese
Professional version, it not only provides the single word input (only single word
input for the Standard version), but also provides the Chinese Word Phrase input
(2 to 4 characters phrase), further distinguishes the input that is with Tone and
without Tone. Each user may select and define their preferred input method.
Entering UnionWay Chinese system, English
is the default input method, you
can use the hot key "Ctrl + Alt + F2" to switch to the PinYin input method. If you
click the
with the left mouse button,
the IME Configuration dialog box will appear. Click the
zone will bring down a list of input
method, select
, and the current input
method is switched to PinYin. This dialog box is then referred to as the PinYin
Configuration dialog box. Select the Keyboard tag will bring up the following keyboard
layout:

This is the without Tone keyboard layout, which is the standard PinYin keyboard.
On the upper right corner, the spin button display 1, indicating it is the keyboard
layout number 1. Clicking the "up" arrow on the spin button will change the display
to 2, bringing us to the with Tone PinYin keyboard layout:

Notice the first input keyboard layout is without Tone, this is a default setting;
the second input keyboard mapping is with Tone. It is very important to select the
keyboard mapping that you are familiar with.
Following are some of the hot keys that you can use during the input:
Ctrl + Space or switch between the current Chinese and English
Alt + ¬ input method
Backspace deletes the input code
Esc clears all input code
Space turn to the next words (phrases)
page
Turn to the previous words (phrases) page
1 to 8 (F1 to F8) are used for selecting the target word
Following are the representation of the tones:
(Numeric
key 1) Light Tone
Space First Tone
(Numeric
key 2) Second Tone
(Numeric
key 3) Third Tone
(Numeric
key 4) Forth Tone
For each word in the PinYin IME, it usually requires
the Consonant + Vowel + (Tone); and for the word phrase, it usually requires the
completion of the First Word + Consonant of the second word. For the with
Tone input, the numeric keys are mapped into an Tone input code first (if
existing), in this case (not typing Tone input code), please select the target word
or phrase using the function keys, from F1 to F8 for the corresponding numeric key.
Intelligent PinYin Input Method
Intelligent PinYin input method provided by UnionWay Chinese system is the simplest
and easiest to use for Chinese input. It is most flexible for word phrase and short
sentence input. While in the PinYin Configuration dialog box, selecting the
option will activate the Intelligent

Input Single Word
Using
as an example:
Without Tone Input
While in the PinYin input mode, and the keyboard is on the layout 1, type the
input code¡u
YUN¡v
for

input is without Tone, all the words that matches the input code will be displayed,
one page at a time, increasing the page turning frequency to find the target word.
If the target word is not on the first page, you may use the Space bar or ¡õ key
to get to the next page. In this example, the target word
is on the fifth position as shown
below:

Pressing the numeric key 1 or the F1 key will bring the target word
into the application program at the
cursor position.
With Tone Input
While in the PinYin input mode, and the keyboard is on the layout 2, type the
input code
for
,
one the first page, it displays list of words that has the same input code. If the
target word is not on the first page, you may use the Space bar or ¡õ key to get
to the next page. In this example, the target word
is on the first page position 7 as
shown below (it may be on different position for different user due to the [Auto
Sort] option may have sorted the word into different position):

Pressing the numeric key 7 or the F7 key will bring the target word
into the application program at the
cursor position.
It is true (for both the Input with Tone and without Tone) that it is not necessary
to type all the input code to get to the target word. In the above example, by typing
(Consonant) or
(Consonant + Tone), could both bring
you to the target word
. However,
the more code that you type, the less pages you have to turn to get to the target
word.
There are two conditions worth noting while typing the single word with Tone.
First, if you do not type the complete input code, maybe need to use the function
keys from F1 to F4 to select target word replacing the numeric keys 1 to 4 , because
the intended selection with numeric key may be taken as part of the Tone input code.
Second, use the ¡õ key for paging instead of the Space bar, because the first Space
bar entry will be taken as the First Tone input, then the second Space bar entry
will be taken as paging. In this second case, all the words in the page will have
the same input code and with First Tone only.
Input Phrase
While using the Intelligent PinYin mode, any one of the following rules may be
applied for the two, three, or four word phrase input:
- Type only the Consonant + (Tone) of each word in the phrase.
- Type the Consonant + (Tone) of the first two or three words in the phrase.
- Type the complete input code of the first word + the Consonant of the second
word in the phrase.
- Type the complete input code of the first two or three words in the phrase.
- Type the complete input code for each of the word in the phrase.
The rule of thumb for word phrase input is that once the Consonant of the words
are keyed in, it is not necessary to type the Vowel or the Tone, and there is no
regulation of how many words you have to use for input as long as you start from
the first word in the word phrase. However, the more code that you type, the less
pages you have to turn to get to the target phrase.
Using

There are two conditions worth noting while typing the phrase with Tone. First,
if you do not type the complete input code, maybe need to use the function keys
from F1 to F4 to select target phrase replacing the numeric keys 1 to 4 , because
the intended selection with numeric key may be taken as part of the Tone input code.
Second, use the ¡õ key for paging instead of the Space bar, because the first Space
bar entry will be taken as the First Tone input, then the second Space bar entry
will be taken as paging.
While typing the PinYin input code, there are a few conditions that need special
attention:
- While typing the vowel
, with
the input code requirement of
,
,
and
,
it is necessary to replace
with
,
and typing as
,
,
and
; similarly,
for input code requirement of
and
,
it is necessary to replace the
with
,
and typing as
and
.
- Entering a phrase for the first time, it is to your advantage to
type the complete input code to reduce the paging, then on the second time typing
for the same phrase , the
Auto
Sort function can assist in finding the target quickly.
- For Intelligent mode phrase input, sometimes the Consonant of the
second word is taken as the vowel of the first word. For example, while typing
the input
, the word that appear
becomes
and other words with the
same input code. There are two way to solving this problem. First, you can use
the word divider
to indicate the
input for the consonant of the second word. Typing the input code
will then
retrieve the phrase
. Second way
is to completely type the input code for the second word, the system will then
combine the
with

thus retrieving the phrase
.
Input Short Sentence
In the dictionary of phrase provided by UnionWay Chinese system contains phrases
of 4 words or less. To expend any of the existing or new phrase into short sentence
of 16 words or less, you may use any one of the dictionary expansion method described
in the next section. Both the input rules for phrase and short sentence are similar.

The yellow zone is holding the input code of the phrase to be added, and you
can make changes to the input code while in this zone. For the ease of future reference
to the phrase, please use the standard input rules.
Pressing the Enter key again will bring up a red zone for holding the phrase
to be added (16 Chinese words or less). Now use the input method provided by UnionWay
Chinese system and enter the phrase

in the red zone (if you are adding a newly created word by the Font Maker, you
will have to use the Internal Code input method to enter the new word into the red
zone) as shown:

Press the Enter key again, the phrase is then simultaneously being added into
the PinYin dictionary and sent to the application program at the cursor position
(yellow and red zone will disappear at this time).
In the process of expending the PinYin dictionary, Backspace is used for delete
input code or Chinese character, Esc is to cancel the process.
Note: The Shift + Fx function keys are used to delete a word or phrase on position
x from the dictionary, pressing Shift + Fx again will restore the delete Chinese
word or phrase.
Input Symbol Characters
On the PinYin keyboard, there are a few Chinese symbols
defined for input such as the Chinese comma, period, etc., but not enough space
